Karawala is a repository that explores the other Caribbean of Central America: an evolving archive of texts, images, and materials that bring together languages, territories, and memories to open new ways of seeing the region.
Karawala takes its name from a community on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast. From that shoreline, this project approaches the Caribbean not as a margin, but as a point of departure.
This site gathers repositories, writings, and visual materials developed as part of an ongoing research project at the University of Washington, in the Department of Spanish & Portuguese Studies, by a doctoral student
